Oil of Oregano vs. Oregano Oil: What’s the Difference and How to Use Them

Are you reaching for oregano oil but unsure what kind you actually need?

Let’s clear up the confusion between oil of oregano and oregano oil, because they’re not always the same and using the wrong one the wrong way can do more harm than good.

✨ What is Oil of Oregano?

Oil of oregano is a concentrated extract of the oregano plant, usually steam-distilled from wild oregano (Origanum vulgare). It contains potent active compounds like:

Carvacrol – powerful antimicrobial

Thymol – antifungal and antiseptic

It’s commonly diluted in olive oil and used medicinally to fight off colds, viruses, gut imbalances (like candida), and inflammation.

🔸 Use it with care ~it’s strong! Always dilute before using it on the skin or taking it internally.

🍃 What is Oregano Oil?

This term is a little trickier. It can mean:

1. Essential oil of oregano (same as oil of oregano)

2. Infused oregano oil: oregano leaves steeped in a carrier oil like olive or jojoba, used for culinary or mild topical use

If the label says “infused oregano oil,” it’s gentler, great for cooking or minor skin support. If it’s the essential oil form, it’s just as potent as oil of oregano and should be used mindfully.

💡 How to Use Oil of Oregano Safely

✅ For immune support: 1–2 drops (diluted) under the tongue or in a capsule

✅ For fungal infections: Mix 1–2 drops in a carrier oil and apply to affected area

✅ For colds: Add a few drops to steam or a diffuser (never directly into nostrils)

⚠️ Avoid use while pregnant or breastfeeding unless guided by a trusted practitioner.

⚠️ Do not use on children under 5 years old.

🌀 Nicole’s Note:

When used mindfully, oil of oregano is like ancient medicine in a bottle but it’s not for everyday use or casual dosing. Know the difference and tune into what your body truly needs. 💫
